The Met Gala, formally called the Costume Institute Gala or the Costume Institute Benefit and also known as the Met Ball, is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. The Gala started in 1946 and the first event was held in 1948. It’s clear, from those who did wear Chinese garb, that tasteful representation was possible. If there was hesitation out of fear for cultural misrepresentation-afraid of ridicule for mockery-I believe the excuse is ridiculous. Given the goal of this exhibit, why didn’t celebrities take this opportunity to dress in Chinese inspired garb or something created by an emerging Chinese designer? Celebrating the history and culture of China, the gala acknowledged the timeless bridge between East and West. If there were ever a venue for designers and celebrities to spread their wings, this was it. As one of the most anticipated events of the year and maybe ever, attendees came to make their mark. Last night, everyone from Chinese elites like Fan Bing Bing, Zhang Ziyi, Carina Lau, Zhao Wei and Angelia Cheung to other Western stars and professionals-pretty much every and any superstar you can imagine, made an appearance on the Red Carpet at the MET Gala for its upcoming exhibit: China Through The Looking Glass.
